Caroline Garcia gets US Open wildcard; But no, she is not unretiring

Caroline Garcia is set to return to action in a month after receiving a main draw wildcard for the US Open, the French Tennis Federation announced.

Just before the start of the French Open, the 31-year-old announced it would be her last pro appearance at Roland Garros. In her Roland Garros farewell, the former world No. 4 lost to Bernarda Pera in the first round.

Since then, Garcia hasn’t taken part in any tournaments. When the news broke out of the Frenchwoman receiving a US Open wildcard, some fans instantly started wondering whether that meant that the 2022 WTA Finals champion had decided to end her retirement. However, that’s not the case. In her retirement announcement from May, she noted that she would still play “a more tournaments” in 2025.

What Garcia said at the time?

“Still, this is not over — not just yet. I have a few tournaments left. The first one is at home, at Roland Garros. My 14th consecutive time being part of it. And my last. So to all my tennis family who’ll be around: let’s meet one more time, to dream, and fight together. In the coming days, there will be more time to share what’s next for me. But for now, I just want to focus on living these last weeks as a tennis pro to the fullest,” the 31-year-old wrote in her message at the time.

This year’s US Open is slated to kick off on August 24th. By requesting and getting a main draw wildcard, Garcia is guaranteed to make at least one more appearance before officially retiring.

Meanwhile, just last week, Garcia got married to her partner Borja Duran.

It remains to be seen how many tournaments the former world No. 4 plans to play in the rest of 2025.
